RESOLUTION TO REALITY: 16 Tips to Help You Stay Focused in 2016.

Soooo… It’s February. Exactly one month after most people’s proclamation of new beginnings, resolutions and high hopes. And if you are like most humans, losing weight and/or getting in shape is high on your list of goals for the year. 

Unfortunately, most that attempt to permanently practice healthy living hardly make it past the first month, and will soon fall right back into unhealthy habits. It happens to the best of us! I would like to share 16 tips that will help you stay focused:

1.)Take it one day at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your abs!

2.) Set small goals each week. You did 20 squats a day this week? Strive for 30 next week. 40 the week after. Just KEEP MOVING.

3.) Slowly adjust your routine. Instead of coming home from work everyday and vegging out on the couch, try to do something physically active at least 2 of those days. Then apply Tip #2 to this.

4.) Try new healthy recipes. Keep it creative in the kitchen. This lifestyle only becomes boring when you stop trying.

5.) Celebrate every victory, even non-scale accomplishments such as having more endurance during a workout.

6.) Take a picture in an article of clothing that is too small. Each Sunday, take a new picture in the same piece of clothing. This will either help you see your progress (since the scale won’t always give you the full story) or give you motivation to go harder and do better.

7.) When grocery shopping, experiment by purchasing a new fruit or vegetable that you’ve never tried before. Research it’s health benefits. Try a recipe that calls for it. This will help expand your palate in a healthy way, have more of an understanding about what it is that you are eating, and ease you into clean eating as a permanent way of life.

8.) Spend less time with people that don’t have the same goals in mind. Sounds harsh, but it’s necessary if you are serious about getting fit.

9.) Stay focused. Stay focused. Stay focused.

10.) Drink more water and less margaritas. I know it’s hard.. Laaaawwwwd knows I do. But think of each sip of the latter as a step in the wrong direction.

11.) Grind now so that you can shine later. Winter is the perfect time to get it tight and get it right. Unveiling that new body during warmer weather is an indescribable feeling.

12.) Do. Not. Reward. Yourself. With. Food. Celebrating weight loss with food is the equivalent to celebrating a completion of an Alcoholics Anonymous program at your local bar. Just don’t.

13.) Switch up your routine. Try a new exercise class. Experiment with yoga. Make it fun! This is one relationship that you hope leads to marriage, so why not spice it up? Haha.

14.) Participate in online fitness challenges. As silly as this may seem, it’s actually genius. Most of us have an internal competitive spirit, so we will do what is necessary to win. Even though there is not always a cash prize, this circumstance is the one time that even if you LOSE, you WIN. You still manage to shed some pounds.

15.) Don’t wait for other people to join you. Yes, I’m sure your cousin and bestie took the same vow as you on New Years Eve.. That you all would become gym buddies, only eat salads, and stop meeting at Chilli’s after work for happy hour.. But things didn’t go as planned.

16.) Be grateful. You have the ability to move, exercise, eat healthy foods, drink clean water. Don’t take any of it for granted.

I hope that these tips help you stay focused on your goals. I truly understand how difficult it can be to navigate in this deep fried world of convenience, but if you finally want to get it right, if you want to be able to look back and say: “I DID IT!” Then you HAVE to keep going. Or else you will be in the same position that you were in on December 31st of last year. Let’s get it!
