We all know that fruits and vegetables are a necessity to a healthy diet, but do you know which ones require a bit more TLC prior to consumption? Well if you don’t know, you’re going to!

There are several fruits and vegetables that are more likely to have much more contamination and pesticides during its harvesting process. 12, to be exact. Many refer to these as the “Dirty Dozen”:

Apples

Celery

Bell Peppers

Peaches

Strawberries

Nectarines

Grapes

Spinach

Lettuce

Cucumbers

Blueberries

Potatoes

Every item on this list is more likely to contain a high level of pesticide residue, and are best if purchased organically. Although they will still need to be soaked and cleaned, organic or not, purchasing these items organically will greatly reduce the number of icky germs we unknowingly put into our bodies.

If buying organic is simply out of the question due to higher costs, then be sure to thoroughly cleanse and soak these items. I suggest soaking in a mix of warm water and vinegar for at least 20 minutes prior to eating.

There are also several fruits and vegetables that contain an almost non-existent level of pesticide residue. These are referred to as the “Clean 15”:

Onions

Corn

Pineapple

Avacado

Cabbage

Peas

Onions

Asparagus

Mangoes

Papayas

Kiwi

Eggplant

Grapefruit

Cantaloupe

Cauliflower

Sweet Potatoes

The items on this list don’t necessarily need to be purchased organically, but (with the exception of fruits that have to be peeled) they should still be cleaned prior to consumption.

It’s extremely important that we put more thought and consideration into the things that we consume. Food is literally killing us. As rapper Birdman says.. “Put some RESPECK on what you eat!”
